I’m currently running free social media workshops at various spaces around Joburg, working with the infrastructure (and fantastic team) of The Joburg Collective. It started out as a conversation between Jen Bean and myself and thanks to her seemingly endless energy reserves, Social Media 101 has come to life.
The aim of this was initially to assist less financially well-off creatives to better utilise social media, and we’re now opening it up to other groups.
It’s been a rewarding and encouraging experience thus far, and given me the opportunity to meet some interesting people who would otherwise never have crossed my path.
Our first workshop was at Boundless Cafe, on a Saturday in September. We held another there the following Thursday after work, inviting a different audience. This was facilitated by Alex from Boundless, one of the drivers behind the “People-based Urban Development” of Boundless Cafe. It’s great chill-out space just off Ghandi Square, with colourful walls, good magazines and very reasonably priced refreshments. The relaxed and colourful environment set the tone for the workshops that followed.
Our most recent workshop was at Platinum Sketch Studios in Jeppe. After the chaos in Jeppe the previous week, I have to admit I was hesitant to be entering the area. But once I was at the Bjala Square building I was made to feel at home, Angel Khumalo, who runs the project, seems to know every single person in the building, and is a calming presence. Yolanda there was actually baking biscuits in the studio, which we ate at the halfway break.
The training sessions were intended to take two half hours, but each has ended up being two hour-long sessions with a break halfway We are always taking tangents in the discussion, veering off to discuss particular points or queries that an attendee brings up. Social media is a vast and varied field, so this seems a pretty good way of meeting the people’ needs while not taking all day!
