Frustrated with the lack of conversation on design and architecture in Durban, I took action and kick-started the open mic creative idea sharing event, PechaKucha Night, in Durban.
Thanks to my Vega syllabus, I was able to thoroughly research the appropriateness of the event for meeting the needs of our local creative community. I also had much needed assistance from lecturers, classmates and the school network to get the event off the ground. Our first event, held in St Mary’s Church Hall on Florida Road, had an attendance of 250 people!
With the assistance of a small group of passionate people, we held six such events on a regular basis with attendance of 250 – 400 people. Andrew Rall and his agency, Agile, soon came on board as a sponsor, and later, when I was no longer able to dedicate enough time to the event, took over as driver.
A highlight included running an independent but parallel event to COP 17 in partnership with eThekwini Municipality.
